The 3rd generation Song Meter SM3 is a fully ruggedized, long-deployment acoustic recorder. It is the only bioacoustics recording device of its kind that can simultaneously record any combination of birds, frogs, insect and/or marine life. The SM3 design innovations were based on countless hours of development and feedback from biologist-users from all over the world.
From innovative recording features, massive data storage capacity, and a significant improvement in deployment time over the SM2+, the new SM3 makes wildlife acoustic data capture easier and far more cost effective than before.
Time is money and the SM3 was designed to reduce your cost of ownership. The SM3 has a new amplifier and energy management software that increases deployment time by 20% over the SM2+. How is this so? In sleep mode between scheduled recordings, the SM3 uses almost no power (around .05 mW), allowing it to remain idle for months at a time.
Using high-quality alkaline batteries, the SM3 can record up to 260 hours of acoustic data with superb detail. That means longer deployments and fewer trips into the field. (Note: the SM3 owner's manual has a detailed listing of battery life per battery type and recording format.)
The SM3 comes with out-of-the box recording programs; including daytime, night time, and continuous recording schedules with automatic configuration. Just pick your desired schedule and press the Start button to begin making recordings immediately. Or, you can create customized, sophisticated schedules and settings to suit your exact needs.
The SM3 is compatible with SDHC and SDXC cards. There are four weatherproof SD card slots and with each card capable of storing 256 gigabytes of data.
The SM3 is one of the only acoustic recorders that allows you to simultaneously record any combination of avian, terrestrial, herpetological and marine life.
Tailored to the needs of avian biologists and herpetologists, the SM3 can be configured with both its new acoustic microphone and a hydrophone to record activity above and below the water, simultaneously. If you need to expand your effective area of coverage, the SM3 can be outfitted with two sets of its new acoustic microphone and up to two runs of 50 meter microphone cables.
The SM3 can record in mono or stereo using a 16-bit PCM.wav or optional .wac lossless compression format. The new, weather resistant SM3-A1 acoustic microphone design applies gain at the microphone to increase signal in the cables and significantly improve resistance to electrical noise interference. The result is vastly higher quality recordings when the microphone cables are run near other cables on metrology towers or wind turbines.
The Song Meter SM3 was designed for use in extreme weather conditions – from jungles and deserts to parts in between. The recorder has been subjected to environmental shock, drop testing, static discharge and extreme water incursion.
We're so confident that the SM3 can endure the most extreme environmental conditions, we back it with a 3 year warranty. That means you can focus on research, not equipment.

One of the fastest and most intuitive spectrogram viewers available.
Song Scope software is fast and flexible – designed to help you quickly review recordings made by Song Meter or other conventional bioacoustics recording equipment. The software features a flexible spectrogram viewer that lets you scroll through large audio files and is typically 10-20 times more time efficient than simply listening. Song Scope’s Song Scape feature lets you visualize sounds on large temporal scales so you can measure sound energy in months and years instead of seconds.
