Hedwig Lankau is the Bioacoustic Equipment Manager for the Bioacoustic Unit at the University of Alberta. She has been using and maintaining automated recording units (ARUS) since 2012. She now manages hundreds of ARUs for the BU field program. She develops ARU field deployment and maintenance protocols creating new versions as new equipment is available. She has built an SQL database for tracking ARUs and related information such as maintenance records. Every year she trains new BU staff on ARU deployment and maintenance. Lately she has traveled within Alberta to teach ARU deployment and maintenance. Hedwig grew up on a small farm surrounded by boreal forest in north-central Alberta, Canada where seeing and hearing all kinds of wildlife was a part of every day. Pursuing a degree in ecology focussed on birds was a natural fit. She became intrigued with recording birds during her masters field work, and this led to her current role at the BU.
