For birds, feathers are everything. They make flight possible, provide insulation from extreme temperatures, and even attract potential mates.
For artist Chris Maynard, feathers are his livelihood. Maynard is obsessed with them, crafting them into painstakingly intricate works of art. These stunning pieces are so detailed that he takes to them with eye surgery scissors and antique magnifying glasses, making sure each one is absolutely perfect.
In case you’re wondering where he gathers the exotic looking materials for his work, he uses feathers exclusively from private aviaries and zoos. He is very selective about which ones he uses, making sure they are flawless and that they lend the perfect color and texture to his pieces.
The photo shown here, titled Wren Territory 2, is actually made from pigeon and parakeet feathers.
