Marine Monitoring

Wildlife Acoustics offers both weatherproof terrestrial recorders and fully submersible marine recorders.  Autonomous submersible recorders, the Song Meter SM2M and the new SM2M Ultrasonic provide researches the ability to record and monitor anthropogenic and biological acoustics.  For non-submersible applications at a lower price point, the Song Meter SM2 platform may be connected to a hydrophone to record and monitor underwater sounds as well as birds frogs and other wildlife.

“We have now used the SM2M in two different locations to record dolphin sounds and ambient noise levels. Wildlife Acoustics supported us every step of the way with great advice.”
Kathleen M. Dudzinski, PhD, Director of the Dolphin Communication Project

“The SM2M recorder works very well to record anthropogenic noise and marine mammal vocalizations. The software is easy to configure in the field, it is simple to rig for the marine environment, runs for weeks without changing batteries, and records months of data on SD cards.”
Lee Shores from Marine Acoustics, Inc.

SM2M and **NEW** SM2M Ultrasonic Submersible Long-term Passive Recorder

Designed for quick refurbishment ship-side for immediate redeployment, the SM2M is the most flexible and cost effective submersible marine recorder on the market.

  • Monitor for multiples species’ acoustics from infrasonic to ultrasonic at the same time or by scheduling different sample rates at different times.
  • Flexible two-channel input allows for settings (sample rate, gain, filters, triggers, etc) to be optimized for different recording objectives on the same hydrophone.
  • Hydrophone may be ordered attached or on an extension cable.
  • Achieve longer deployment times using a recording schedule or duty cycle with negligible power consumption during “sleep” mode.
  • May be anchored and recovered via tether, diver or optional acoustic release for easy retrieval.
  • Features adaptive triggering and compression requiring less storage capacity to allow for months of deployment.

SM2+ Weatherproof Passive Recorder

Designed to withstand harsh and wet environments, the SM2+ may be mounted above water with a hydrophone submerged on an 8 meter cable. In this configuration, the SM2+ leverages all its features from its terrestrial application. Customers may:

  • Effortlessly program on a computer or directly on the SM2+ simple or complex recording schedules with varying duty cycles relative to local sunrise or sunset.
  • Leverage the SM2+ two channel feature to record marine acoustics on the hydrophone while recording birds, bats and other wildlife up to 100m away via a second microphone connected to the second channel.
  • Record up to 230 hours using four D-size alkaline or NiMH batteries.

Specifications

Power:
-Two AA batteries for internal clock lasts two years.
-Four D-size alkaline or NiMH batteries enable up to 230 hours of recording.
