"Every summer, the Roger Tory Peterson Institute of Natural History creates opportunities for local high school students to get involved in the study of local natural history as part of our Project Wild America Youth Ambassador program. Together, we study the wild side of our small city of Jamestown, NY, the birthplace of Roger Tory Peterson (of Peterson Field Guide fame), and a place that once inspired one of the great naturalists of the 20th century. We hope that our work will spark some enthusiasm for nature study and encourage these young researchers to pursue a career in a relevant field. Our bat surveys have always been one of the more popular programs and the excitement of using the Echo Meter to make the bat calls audible and visible is palpable. Suddenly, yet another never-before-seen aspect of urban nature becomes 'real'."
