Standing on the Side of Science, Freedom, and Democracy: A Message from Our CEO
How does Wildlife Acoustics' Song Meter Micro 2 compare to AudioMoth 1.2.0? Both offer lightweight, economical solutions for passively recording birds, amphibians, terrestrial mammals, and soundscapes.
But when it comes to detection, Micro 2 outperforms in critical areas, combining superior SNR and a flatter frequency to capture detailed soundscapes and accurate acoustic indices. And that’s not all. Read on to learn about important differences between the two acoustic recorders.
Micro 2 arrives fully assembled in an ultra-compact, lightweight enclosure. All parts—microphone, weatherproof housing, and electronics—are engineered and optimized to work together out of the box.
The Micro 2s hinged, ergonomic housing conveniently features a built-in tripod mount, mounting loops, and a dedicated mounting tab for positioning and securing the recorder in almost any environment. Simply add an SD card and batteries, configure your settings, and you’re ready to go.
The Micro 2 features an IP67-rated weatherproof enclosure built to endure harsh conditions, including extreme temperatures and humidity (sustained and fluctuating). Its rugged polycarbonate housing ensures dependable operation in any terrestrial environment.
This feature ensures you don’t miss a thing—whether you deploy in the desert heat, frozen peaks, tropical forests, or driving rain.
Using the Song Meter Configurator app, you can easily configure your Micro 2 using an iOS® or Android™ smartphone or tablet. Simply pair your mobile device with the companion app to automatically set your recorder's GPS location, time, and timezone.
Choose a preset recording schedule to capture peak activity periods (e.g., “Record birds/frogs two hours around sunrise and two hours around sunset”) or set a custom schedule to fit your needs. Then, save your configurations to a “library” to program multiple recorders with identical settings.
Check your Micro 2 battery and microphone levels, memory card status, schedule settings, and more when in Bluetooth range. And, for ultimate peace of mind, view the date your battery and SD card space are estimated to run out based on your programmed schedule and settings.
The Micro 2’s microphone is fine-tuned for optimal performance within its enclosure, ensuring a consistent sensitivity (flat frequency response) across the spectrum and a high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) that records even quiet and distant wildlife.
Because the Micro 2 was engineered as a complete solution (with microphone, electronics, and enclosure working together), you get cleaner recordings with fewer distractions—accelerating analysis and discovery.
The Song Meter Micro 2 combines low noise and a flat frequency response to capture accurate soundscapes and acoustic indices. By comparison, AudioMoth 1.2.0, with increasing high-frequency sensitivity and lack of anti-alias filtering, can result in recordings with unwanted noise and undesirable “hiss” caused by the microphone detecting its electrical workings.
With a higher signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) across key biological frequencies than the AudioMoth 1.2.0, the Micro 2 is better equipped to capture faint or distant sounds.
The result? You capture more of what you want to record—specific wildlife species or soundscape features—and less distracting noise, making finding target species or sounds easier during analysis.
